A message from our chief executive officer
Addressing climate change will be the greatest challenge of this generation. The challenge will require collaboration, transparency, innovation and behavioural changes if we are to successfully transition to a low-carbon future.
We are fortunate in the UK to have legally binding targets to get to net zero by 2050 and to have an independent, statutory body in the Climate Change Committee to advise and report progress made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for the impact of climate change.
The challenge ahead is therefore to translate the initiatives and targets into real action and implementation.
Manufacturing has a significant role to play in the low-carbon transition. Between 1990 and 2020, manufacturing and construction in the UK reduced its emissions by 58% from 1990 levels. By 2030, emissions need to be reduced by 75% from 1990 levels and by 2035, by 87% from 1990 levels.
Therefore the next ten years are critical if we are to achieve net zero by 2050.
Manufacturers can lead the way in tackling the global climate emergency. As an integral part of the manufacturing ecosystem, we at the University of Sheffield AMRC are committed to working hard on our own carbon footprint but also to working with our industrial partners to develop innovations that drive reductions in energy use, reductions in carbon emissions and increases in circularity of products and materials.
