Prime Minister highlights AMRC's role in aiding manufacturing

08 February 2015

Prime Minister David Cameron has highlighted the work of the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing, during Question Time in the House of Commons.

Mr Cameron was responding to a question about investment in northern manufacturing.

He told the Conservative MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, Andrew Jones, that the Government was helping to encourage manufacturing investment and output to increase.

"We will be playing our part by investing £10 million in the development of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in South Yorkshire," Mr Cameron added.

Recent funding announcements benefitting the AMRC have included an announcement that it will be spearheading developments in powder metallurgy, aimed at improving the quality and capabilities of the technology, so that it can be more widely used in manufacturing.

The AMRC will also benefit from additional funding allocated to the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, of which it and the Nuclear AMRC are leading members.

The High Value Manufacturing Catapult is a consortium of six leading manufacturing and process research centres, backed by the UK's innovation agency, Innovate UK, which helps companies of all sizes develop new technologies to create commercial products.

Mr Cameron said the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and other Catapults could "make a real difference by backing the revival of manufacturing in our country."
