Inspiring the workforce of tomorrow with ‘Skills for the Future’

10 February 2025

As the UK celebrates National Apprenticeship Week 2025, the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) is highlighting the exceptional skills that transform cutting-edge research into real-world solutions.

Alongside the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre, together we are dedicated to creating opportunities for individuals at every stage of their careers, from school leavers to industry professionals.

Apprenticeships through the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre provide the future workforce with invaluable hands-on experience, equipping them with the technical expertise needed to thrive in advanced manufacturing. The AMRC Training Centre case studies showcase the journeys apprentices go through that benefit them, with real-world practical skills and knowledge that they can take into their chosen careers, creating an impact on industry; from running their own projects, to increasing equipment reliability across supply chains.

Professor Ben Morgan, interim chief executive officer of the AMRC, said: “This year's theme of ‘Skills for the Future’ aligns perfectly with the AMRC’s mission to shape the next generation of engineers, and help organisations adapt to an ever-evolving industrial landscape.

“At the AMRC, we believe that while cutting-edge technology shapes the future, it is the dedication and talent of people that make it possible.”

For those seeking work experience, the AMRC offers a range of placements, from one-week work experience, to year-long opportunities, all designed to build confidence and capability.

Postgraduate students can access a gateway to transformative projects; the AMRC Cymru graduate programme includes working closely with partners to help them access advanced technologies that will drive improvements in productivity, performance and sustainability in manufacturing, whilst work placements at AMRC North West have allowed local students to work with teams at the forefront of digital technology.

The AMRC’s STEM outreach programmes work to inspire the next generation, engaging young people through relatable role models and hands-on classroom activities that spark curiosity and ambition.

For industry professionals, the AMRC Training Centre provides bespoke Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes, enabling organisations to up-skill, re-skill, or multi-skill their workforce. These programmes ensure businesses can respond to ever-changing industry demands without compromising on quality or standards.

With a range of skills to meet the needs of the industry demands, the AMRC is proud to be at the forefront of innovation, empowering individuals and organisations with the tools to build a bigger, brighter, and more sustainable future.
