A diverse group of manufacturing and engineering companies joined forces with University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre apprentices to raise over £5000 for their 2015 Master Cutlers Challenge charity golf day!

The day saw 13 teams of competitors play a four-ball, shotgun start round of golf with a range of competitions thrown in around the course to keep things exciting. Dinner and a raffle followed and the apprentices raised a grand total of £5762.

The winning team of the day was local manufacturers of heavy and complex engineering components for the mining, nuclear and energy sectors, DavyMarkham. They took home the incredible AMRC Apprentices' annual charity challenge trophy designed by the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing.

Generously sponsored by Sheffield-based high performance rotary cutting tools provider Technicut Ltd.; the trophy was sintered in titanium by The Mercury Centre - Sheffield specialists in powder-based manufacturing.

The annual Master Cutlers Challenge sees companies, associations, schools and individuals given £50 to multiply as much as they can over a six month period, using only their creativity, teamwork and entrepreneurial skills.

Each year the money is then donated to a various charities; with the Brathay Trust, Help for Heroes and a variety of smaller Sheffield charities being chosen to receive funds this year to help the young people of the region.

The AMRC Training Centre apprentices ran other competitions and raffles throughout the year at the AMRC, bringing their grand total of fundraising for the 2015 Master Cutlers Challenge to an amazing £7341.85.

AMRC Apprentice, Edward Allen, who helped organise the golf day said: "The Master Cutlers Challenge is not only a fun way to raise money for a lot of worthwhile causes in the local area; our golf day gave some of our apprentices a chance to speak with key figures from industry."

UK sales manager for the Engineering Technology Group, Stewart Cousins said: "The day was a great opportunity to raise money for charity, refresh some old contacts and network with other companies.

"It was a lot of fun, great company and good location; it was good to see everyone get into the competitive spirit. I played quite well considering the amount of golf I have played this year! We will definitely be back again next year!"

Next year's AMRC Charity Challenge Golf Day will take place on Friday 10 June 2016. Anyone is able to enter a team of four to raise money for worthwhile local causes. Contact Chloe Lidster for more information on 0114 222 6661 or c.lidster@amrc.co.uk.
